Now that the geeky glitz of SWSW is over it’s time to reflect back on what you took away from the conference other than a stack of business cards and a few hangovers.

Smashing Magazine is one of my favorite blogs for design news and opinions. It’s where you go if you are a font geek or want to see what’s happening in the online design world. They recently posted a really cool article reviewing some non-profit web sites from a design and usability point of view. Even a few sites like the Red Nose Day Campaign or the WWF, which have some of the best designs around got taken to task for a few design errors.

Your community is probably filled with a lot of bright people. People that have all kinds of advice and cool tips on how to make your nonprofit more effective. But are you tapping your community as a resource?

A survey of over 900 nonprofit leaders revealed a sizable inadequacy in their ability to connect with their audience and portray their primary messages.

More than one-third of Facebook users in the US, UK and Australia have donated money and/or goods to relief efforts aimed at the January 12, 2010 earthquake which struck Haiti, according to a joint survey conducted by Facebook and The Nielsen Company.

“Are all nonprofits the same?” If nonprofits in general conduct similar work, why do some people feel more inclined to donate to one over another? It boils down to the experience that organizations can offer to their community, but what next?
