Even if your nonprofit isn’t on Twitter yet it’s probably a good idea to park your organization’s name or risk other people taking it over.

A survey done by AdAge revealed even Fortune 500 companies missed their opportunity to take ownership of their Twitter names. Companies like General Motors, General Electric, Diageo, Coty, Comcast, Eli Lilly, Kellogg Co., MasterCard, Nestle and Walt Disney, all have had had their Twitter handle taken over by someone else.

Even with Twitter’s new verification system it might take some time to actually authenticate the real users so it’s a much safer bet to just register early and get around to your social media strategy when you have the time.
