Friday Funny: Madmen era ad boasts of destroying 7 tons of glaciers every day.

Exxon-glaciers A glimpse back into the Madmen advertising era, when energy companies boasted about their ability to destroy the planet,  rather than conserve it.

Don’t think Don Draper would let this  get past the brainstorm stage these days.

See the ad in full.

Vintage 1962 LIFE magazine ad from  Humble Energy – which became Exxon after its merger with Standard Oil. With a not so humble boast about it’s ability to generate enough energy   to melt 7 tons of glaciers each day.

The text of the ad reads:

Each day Humble Supplies Enough Energy to Melt 7 Million Tons of Glacier!
This giant glacier has remained unmelted for centuries. Yet, the petroleum energy Humble supplies — if converted into heat — could melt it at the rate of 80 tons each second! To meet the nations growing needs for energy, Humble has applied science to nature’s resources to become America’s Leading Energy Company. Humble provides energy in many forms — to help heat our homes, power our transportation, and to furnish industry with a great variety of versatile chemicals. Stop at a Humble station for new Enco Extra gasoline, and see why the ‘Happy Motoring’ sign is the World’s First Choice!!

Thanks to Duncan Green at From Poverty to Power for finding this gem.

  • That's amazing! "if converted into heat" just needs to change to, "WHEN converted to heat." Lucky us, it all came true.

I'm also so thankful to Humble for providing us with, "...a great variety of versatile chemicals." Great, indeed!
